Item Description

Historic in nature, this fine Fluorapatite specimen has numerous tabular, hexagonal crystals to 6 mm. The lavendar color is quite attractive, and the gemmy crystals have a rich, yellow fluorescence. Greifensteine has often been said to be the type locality for Fluorapatite, where it was discovered 1860, but Sauberg, also in Ehrenfriedersdorf, has historical priority dating back to the discovery there in 1823. Previously in the Miller collection from the 1800’s, after which it went to James B. Cone and the Wadsworth Atheneaum, and then to the Loomis Chaffee School (this label style is known to have that history). From the large worldwide collection of historical minerals, of George Elling of New Jersey.
