Item Description

Interesting, biomorphic looking, large, 360-degree flint nodule from the famous Late Cretaceous (100-66 MYA) chalk White Cliffs of Dover, England on the English Channel. Flint is a sedimentary cryptocrystalline form of quartz that occurs in the chalk (soft, porous limestone) or marly limestone of the Cliffs. The piece resembles a seagull (apt location) with a body, upturned neck, head with eyes and beak. Ex John Whately Collection and acquired in 1969. John was a well-known Georgia collector (1939-2022). He had many interests and hobbies. His favorite hobby was collecting rocks and minerals and he was a member of the Augusta and Aiken, SC Gem and Mineral Society.
