Item Description

A superb quality and very rarely seen fossil of an ancient horse (Equus simplicidens) knuckle (phalanx or pastern bone) from a find near Port Royal, Beaufort County, South Carolina. The piece dates back to the Pleistocene epoch. The piece is complete all around and is incredibly well-preserved with fine detail. This is the only one of these fossils that we've ever had to offer in the auctions, and it is remarkably fine quality. If you collect fossils, this is a very good example of something that is not commonly seen on the market. I've seen a fair number of ancient horse teeth for sale over the years, but these phalanx / pastern bones are hard to find.
From the collection of Jack Arbiser.
