Epidote with Byssolite (old classic circa 1800s)

The alpine clefts around Knappenwand have been well-known since 1865 for producing some of the world's finest Epidote crystals, and this cluster shows why. The long, slender crystals reach up to 6 cm, the luster is excellent, and the gemminess allows you to appreciate the deep honey color. Many of the Epidotes are nicely terminated, and there is greenish nest of "Byssolite" needles, a form of Actinolite, tucked among the Epidotes. This is a classic association for Knappenwand, and makes this small cabinet piece even more aesthetic and desirable.(Note please, it does have damage, as seen in photos - an incredible specimen to look at, but with damage up close). Previously in the Miller collection from the 1800’s, after which it went to James B. Cone and the Wadsworth Atheneaum, and then to the Loomis Chaffee School (this label style is known to have that history). From the large worldwide collection of historical minerals, of George Elling of New Jersey. Previous dealer price tag lists it at $2500 from a decade or more ago.
