Item Description

An impressive, big display specimen from the Garnet Hill Mine featuring a predominant, lustrous, sharp, thick prism of dark green Epidote measuring 7.7 cm, sitting on a matrix covered with a good number of attractive, trapezohedral crystals of rich reddish colored Andradite Garnet measuring up to 1.2 cm across, with minor Quartz on matrix. It's the best specimen of its size that we've ever had to offer from the locality and the combination of the green Epidote and red Garnets makes for a pleasing visual. The Epidote crystal is not completely pristine, as it's contacted on the back of the termination, and there's a separation mark along the prism, but it's aesthetically positioned on the specimen, and the piece displays nicely as you can see from the video. A really striking and majestic hefty cabinet sized piece of this fairly hard to find material, especially in specimens this size.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 407 CA.2; 1542 George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
