Item Description

Epidote specimen from this little-known skarn deposit is probably best known for Japan-twin Quartz crystals, and pieces of this size and quality are few and far between. I can say that these are the largest and thickest Epidote crystals I can remember seeing from the locality, the largest of which measures 5.0 cm long. The crystals have excellent luster, with smooth, well-formed faces and a dark green hue, free of matrix. There are some sub-surface reflections of a brighter pistachio green hue that can be seen when the piece is rotated in the light. The piece was originally part of the Lyman House Memorial Museum in Hawaii and was deaccessioned in 1995. A very good display specimen of this seldom seen material, and it's the kind of high quality esoteric piece that you can expect to find in a broad and thorough collection like George's.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 407 CA.3; 2307 George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
