Item Description
A wonderful, thick, hefty Epidote crystal labeled as coming from the "Raywoo Mine" in Balochistan, Pakistan, though I can't find any confirmation that this is a valid locality. With that said, these Epidotes don't get enough credit for their size and quality, as they are notably good for the species. If you think about famous Epidotes from localities like the Knappenwand in Austria or the Green Monster Mountain in Alaska, neither of them typically produce crystals of this thickness, while still having good luster and form. This piece has sharp, lustrous faces with a deep green hue, and the main crystal is accented by several smaller crystals to give the specimen a bit of three-dimensional flair. Some lighter pistachio-green colored massive Epidote can be seen in a few spots creating contrast. The piece is in good shape, though not 100% complete, as there is some interrupted growth (not true damage) in some spots.
From the collection of Robert (Bob) Reynolds who passed in August of 2020. Bob was a well-known fossil and mineral expert and former Curator of Earth Sciences at the San Bernardino County Museum in California. The rare phyllomanganate-chromate species Reynoldsite was named in his honor in 2011.
