Item Description

Butte is one of the great old historic mining districts in the United States. This area is quite famous for producing some of the finest crystals of Enargite ever found. The Leonard Mine is often cited as the premier mine in the district for the species. Good Butte specimens are quite difficult to find on the market today, so we're always happy to see them. This piece is filled with excellent, razor-sharp, lustrous, dark metallic grey-black colored tabular striated crystals of Enargite measuring up to 4 mm, which are associated with slightly iridescent purple-blue Chalcocite and golden metallic Pyrite crystals. Minor damage can be seen, but it's still in good condition overall. Very showy and eye-catching for this historic and now elusive material from Butte.
From the collection of Richard ("Rich") Kosnar (1946-2007), the well-known mineral dealer and collector from Colorado. He was the namesake for the rare zirconium phosphate mineral, Kosnarite.
