Item Description

Enargite is a signature mineral species, indeed one of the 'Holy Grails', of the Butte District in Montana. This fine, old-time combination piece is composed of prismatic Enargite crystals, up to 2 cm across, tucked in a pocket among Pyrite crystals. The metallic luster, as well as the striations, are very good on both species. Sulfides tend to be rather brittle so some wear is not unexpected, but considering this fine small cabinet piece is over a century old, the condition is more than acceptable. Butte is famous for producing some of the finest Enargite crystals on the planet, so this combination piece is a true find, and is especially coveted by Butte collectors. Previously in the Miller collection from the 1800’s, after which it went to James B. Cone and the Wadsworth Atheneaum, and then to the Loomis Chaffee School (this label style is known to have that history). From the large worldwide collection of historical minerals, of George Elling of New Jersey.
