Enargite is fairly uncommon in good crystallized examples from most mines in Colorado, and certainly the finest Enargite crystals from any locality in Colorado are those from the Longfellow Mine, which lies on Red Mountain, near the Ouray County / San Juan County line at an elevation of 11,200 feet. This locality was actually mined for copper, though it is the Enargites for which mineral collectors will think of when it comes to this mine. This small cabinet display specimen is filled with dozens of fine quality, sharp, well-formed, striated, jet-black prismatic crystals of Enargite measuring up to 5 mm, sitting on sulfide and host rock matrix. Upon close inspection, small imperfections can be seen, but overall the piece is in good shape, and I can't recall seeing another piece this size from this mine with such a rich coverage of crystals.

Ex George Loud Collection No. 3322 CO.4; 10,270 George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size.
