Item Description
Here we have an incredibly hard to find matrix specimen of Emerald from the little known Emerald mines at Campos Verdes in the state of Goiás, Brazil. Most of the time we're used to seeing Emeralds from Bahia, and occasionally Minas Gerais, but the pieces from Campos Verdes are exceedingly rare on the market. This locality dates back to the early 1980s, and I'm not even certain if there is active mining going on today. This particular piece dates back to the early discoveries at this locality, and there is even an old hand-written tag on the back that states it came from the Halton Collection. There are three Emerald crystals on this specimen with good color, and moderate gemminess / translucency along with well-formed, hexagonal prism faces sitting atop schist matrix. The largest crystal measures 6.2 cm long. The smaller crystals are not terminated due to the nature in which they grew against the larger Emerald, but you can clearly see the biggest crystal has a basal termination, which is overgrown by schist at the top. If you're a fan of Emeralds, this one of those pieces that you rarely see available, so don't miss out on a chance to pick this one up for your collection. From the collection of William ("Bill") (1927-2006) and Anne (1928-2021) Cook of Cleveland, Ohio. This husband and wife duo were actively involved in the mineral world for many decades. Bill was a PhD geologist, and Anne was a mathematician, and they both were very serious mineral collectors. Bill served for many years as adjunct curator of mineralogy at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and Anne was inducted into the Micromounters' Hall of Fame on October 12, 2019. Both Bill and Anne, at various times, served as president both of the Mineralogical Society of Cleveland and of the Micromineral Society of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and Anne was inducted into the mi The rare barium lithium beryllium phosphate Wilancookite was named in their honor in 2015.
