Emerald Drink Coaster

The Bahia region of Brazil is well known for producing Emeralds. The majority of the material has great color, but is not nearly as gemmy as their Colombian counterparts. Recently, we had our cutters start producing drink coasters out of rough material from a production run that came out in 2010. We shopped around in Tucson, and couldn't find anything like them on the market. What makes these coasters so great is the fact that no two are alike, and the color combination is really eye-catching! This coaster shows a beautiful mix of light and dark green Emerald (with some distinct hexagonal crystal sections floating inside), which are intermixed with white Quartz and black Mica (most likely Biotite). When backlit, some of the Emerald crystals glow with color. The piece was a bit difficult to photograph, and truly looks better in person. A great novelty, and a cool piece of gem art unlike anything that we've seen. It has a good thickness, and since both sides are attracitve, you decide which side you want to face up. The piece doesn't have to be used as a coaster either, as it would also show very well in a display case with some decent backlighting. Certainly different, and well worth the $100 bid for the size and thickness of the piece.
