The Schauss collection contains an important location suite of tourmaline single crystals, with emphasis on condition, luster, and clarity. This is the Afghani example - a lustrous transparent multi-colored blue and pink terminated crystal, simply a special and very gem example for a thumbnail of this style from Afghanistan. Elbaite is the name for a multi-colored member of the tourmaline group of minerals. This is a large, full sized thumbnail for what it is. Not rare in principle, but rare in this quality as a full thumbnail example. Note the nice provenance - this is an old piece from the 1980s/90s, sold from the F. John Barlow collection to the Allan Young collection; and then obtained by Alex for his tourmaline gem singles suite.
