Item Description
Jasper is fine-grained form of Chalcedony and gets its name from the Greek for "spotted stone". The material is always opaque, and basically an impure variety of Silicon Dioxide which usually is colored red, yellow, brown or green. This mineral breaks with a smooth surface, and is used for ornamentation or as a gemstone. It can be highly polished and is used for carving all kinds of items. When the colors are in stripes or bands, it is called striped, banded or "picture" jasper. Jasper is basically chert which is colored red most often my iron inclusions. This particular stone is what is called Dynasty Jasper, a rare variety found only in Mexico as far as I can tell. It somewhat reminds me of Zebra Stone from Australia with its lighter pink coloration mixed with deep reddish-brown banding. This particular "Freeform Cabochon" cut gem has a very artistic patterning, and looks beautiful in person. If you collect cabochons, or even unusual varieties of Chalcedony / Quartz, do not miss out on this excellent stone. Valued at $286.80 retail.
