Item Description
Very uncommon, this is a large and fine doubly terminated floater crystal of the unique, organic-based mineral mellite, most of which come from Hungary. This is an aluminum mellitate (benzene hexacarboxylate) hydrate, a rare secondary mineral in lignite deposits. You simply do not see these often, and they have been found in only nine localities worldwide. This striking crystal has dense, textbook tetragonal stepped-growth form, fine luster, translucence and classic mottled honey-brown color. Pristine. This is the finest example of the rare species we have offered at auction. Ghostly white fluorescence. Ex Bob Trimingham Collection.
