Item Description

Here we have a wonderful example of the old Dryhead Agates from Montana. This distinctive and beautiful variety was first discovered in the 1950s. Their impressive and eye-catching banding patterns resembles agates from famed Mexican localities, such a Laguna and Coyamito. It is said that these Agates were named for the old bison skulls that were found near the deposit, but the locality is also in close proximity to Dryhead Creek, so maybe the creek was named after the bison skulls, and the Agate was named after the creek. These stones show a beautiful combination of warm orange, red, pink, lavender and yellow hues with excellent distinct banding. This piece is a polished / tumbled nodule of this desirable material featuring attractive layered bands that range in color from warm earthy tones to slight lavender shades. These specimens are rarely seen on the market these days, and I'm told that the cost of mining exceeds the value of the material, so very little has come out over the past few decades. You really only see these pieces from old collections now. The piece weighs 147.5 grams.
