Item Description

Dryhead Agate is a distinctive variety of Agate that was first discovered in Montana in the 1950s. Their outstanding dense banding resembles agates from famed Mexican localities, such a Laguna and Coyamito It is said that the material gets its name from old bison skulls that were found near the deposit, but it's also in close proximity to Dryhead Creek, so maybe the creek was named after the bison skulls, and the Agate was named after the creek. These stones show a beautiful combination of warm orange, red, pink, lavender and yellow hues with excellent distinct banding. This piece is a polished / tumbled nodule of this desirable material featuring attractive layered bands that range in color from warm earthy tones to slight pinkish and lavender shades. The center of the nodule has a small hollow opening. These specimens are rarely seen on the market these days, and I'm told that the cost of mining exceeds the value of the material, so very little has come out over the past few decades. You really only see these pieces from old collections now. The piece weighs 69.1 grams.
