Dravite-Schorl Series Tourmaline (Bob Reynolds Coll.)

Item Description

Striking, densely intergrown jackstraw clusters of highly lustrous, parallel-growth, well-striated tourmaline crystals are dramatically accented with contrasting off-white feldspar. Most of the tourmalines are opaque black schorl, but close examination under bright light shows areas of the crystals with glassy, translucent brown areas (dravite). Analytical studies on some tourmaline crystals show a series between Schorl and Dravite. Two labels with the piece list the tourmaline variety as Foitite. Ex Bob Reynolds Collection, fossil and mineral expert and Curator of the San Bernardino County Museum. This is a sculptural and excellent 360-degree small cabinet combinatin example of the species. Mineral specimens from Riverside County pegmatites are rare compared to those from prolific San Diego County pegmatites.
