A stunning and probably important large Dolomite from this historic Magnesite mine in Styria, Austria. Mining started at this deposit in the mid-1600s and has been mined nearly continuously since, mostly for decorative stone and now MgO for numerous modern applications...over 375 years! In that time, the mine has produced fantastic Dolomite pieces, like this one, as well as other well-crystallized mineral species. This handsome specimen is topped by a superb, large, 8 cm-across, crystal that is translucent to transparent; and with several smaller Dolomite crystals in association. The big rhombohedral Dolomite is distinctly zoned having a translucent to cloudy center and a nearly transparent outer zone; and the smaller crystals on the piece mimic this to a lesser degree. Geometry is perfection here...and at 8 cm across on the frontal display, this is a very dramatic display piece of something we normally only see in old museums or books. It is an excellent piece for the species, especially from this old European locality. Complete all around, it also has aesthetics. Valued $2500.
