Dolomite (iron-bearing)

Item Description

A seldom seen specimen of iron-bearing Dolomite from the Vekol Mine in Arizona featuring very sharp, rather lustrous, notably well-formed rhombic crystals of a rich reddish hue measuring up to 1.0 cm on edge, sitting on matrix. The piece was collected by Dave Shannon and later passed to Mike Corrigan, from whom John Whatley acquired it in 1983. The Dolomite crystals have a very slight curvature to them, which is fairly common in the species, and gives the already glistening rhombs an added touch of visceral beauty. No major damage, only a few minor "rubs". A really attractive and hard to find locality specimen dating back over 40 years.
From the collection of John Whatley, a well-known Georgia collector (1939-2022). John had many interests and hobbies, and favorite hobby was collecting rocks and minerals. He was a member of the Augusta and Aiken, SC Gem and Mineral Society. He also enjoyed collecting arrowheads and he co-authored the book, An Overview of Georgia Projectile Points and Select Cutting Tools. He was a member of the Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama Archaeology Societies and he also enjoyed volunteering in the Archaeology Department at SRS.
