Item Description

A classic old-time specimen of Styrian dolomite, composed of both rare rhombohedral and flattened, disklike dolomite crystals together in the same cluster. The large disk is 5.2 cm across and the large rhomb is 4.5 cm on the diagonal. This is complete on both sides. It was in the collection of noted collector and author, Captain John Sinkankas of San Diego, since 1964. Note his continual appreciation of its increasing values over the years - a matter in which John was diligent at recording. The gray crystals are sharp, glassy and translucent. Patches of magnesite microcrystals and scattered quartz points are a fine accent to this exceptional large and pristine example. Difficult to photograph, this is much better in person! Valued $1000
