Djurleite and Chalcocite "Copper wood" w/ Silver veins (RARE New Mexico)

Item Description

A highly unusual large pseudomorph from this extinct open pit New Mexico copper mine. Chalcocite and Djurleite, gray to black copper sulfides, have pseudomorphed a flattened section of fossilized wood. Some of the Chalcocite and Djurleite has altered to green malachite. A major bonus is the pseudomorphed fossil wood resting on the layered coarse sandstone matrix shot through with Malachite and accented with thin veins of Silver. The sandstone is Upper Triassic-aged Chinle Formation (237-201 MYA). "These logs were the main source of ore for the open pit mine, and high silver values were found in some of the logs." (Phil Simmons - well-known New Mexico field collector, collector and dealer). You can see the narrow silver veins in this, as it is a heavy speicmen of silver and copper ore, itself! Choice and uncommon richly mineralized large copper ore fossilized wood from New Mexico. Locally known as "Copper Wood". Rare in this style.
