Item Description
Very gemmy and lustrous, rich emerald-green, dioptase crystals to 1.2 cm are richly and attractively scattered on the starkly contrasting matrix of iron oxide-coated, smithsonite micro-rhombs from the famous and now-closed Tsumeb Mine. The main, core crystal cluster of larger crystals is pristine. Scattered brusing is noted to outlying dioptase crystals, but is certainly only a modest detraction in overall context given the size and isolation of the big crystals at the core. We only just realized that the matrix is actually massive smithsonite (which is why it had to be sawed for trimming, instead of the usual breaking out of host matrix). This combination is relatively uncommon and this is a very fine example. The gemminess, luster and intense color are way above average for this renowned locale and the dioptase on their own merits a good price regardless of the unusual matrix. Valued at $900-1000
