Dioptase on Calcite

Superb luster and beautiful, deep-green color are but two characteristics that show why Dioptases, such as this small-cabinet sized specimen, are one of Tsumeb's 'Holy Grails'. Dioptase on white Calcite is the combination that immediately leaps to mind, but pieces like this, where the Dioptase rests on a darker bed of micro Calcites, are dramatic in their own right. The Dioptases reach up to 1 cm, and they are well-distributed across both sides of the plate. Against the sparkly, darker background, the crystals have a richer, more machined look that to my eye helps them stand out even more. They seem darker, but more sparkly and refined. They have a heft and a beautiful aesthetic that is second to none. This is a wonderful, first-class specimen of the style, and incredibly beautiful in the hand.
