Item Description
Very rich emerald-green, gemmy and lustrous dioptase crystals, to 2.0 cm (doubly terminated), are richly and dramatically festooned on the large, very vuggy, 3-dimensional matrix on this impressive specimen from this old abandoned open pit copper mine. Operated in the early 20th century and closed before World War II. This striking piece could be from the primary operating period or from artisanal diggers in the old workings later. This striking piece is of rare size and caliber for the locality. These crystals do have not quite the luster of a Tsumeb dioptase (or the best Kaokoveld pieces), but have even deeper green color to them. The base has been sawed to enhance the excellent display quality. 1246 grams or 2.7 pounds mass. Ex Paul Zerfass Collection No. 140. MUCH better in person.
