Item Description

A wonderful old time Diaspore specimen from the famous Chester Emery Mines, in Chester, Massachusetts. These are some of the most well known Diaspore specimens outside of Turkey. This piece comes to us from an old East Coast collection, with an historic label from the legendary mineral dealer, Hugh A. Ford. Since the label has Ford's New York address it dates to 1946-1957, so we know the piece is at least 60 years old and considering the locality dates back to 1896, it could be over a century old. It features WELL-CRYSTALLIZED, lustrous, striated, prismatic tan-green colored crystals of Diaspore measuring up to 7 mm associated with somewhat "rosette"-shaped groups of dark blackish-green Corundophilite (a variety of Chamosite) sitting on emery (a rock consisting predominantly of Corundum with Spinel and iron oxides) matrix. HARD TO FIND these days and beloved by New England collectors for their signifigance and historic value.
