Item Description
This is an attractive old Descloizite from this historic silver mine in the Georgetown District of New Mexico which dates back to 1870. The Descloizites from this mine are some of the most colorful examples of the species from any locality, despite their smaller size. Typically Descloizite is brown or tan, but this specimens features bright reddish-orange somewhat radial crystals on Quartz matrix. We have photographed the piece with a Canon MP-E 65 mm macro lens to better illustrate the quality. It is possible that these crystals are pseudomorphing after Vanadinite, but I'm not enough of an expert with this material to know for sure. A lovely thumbnail specimen with beautiful micro crystals. Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#9468). Kay was a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics. She nearly lived 100 years from April 1920 - March 2020. See the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record ( https://www.mineralogicalrecord.com/pdfs/Kay%20Robertson%20Collection.pdf ), and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017.
