Deerite, Howieite, Zussmanite set (Type Locality specimens)

Item Description

The chance discovery of three rare silicates at the Laytonville Quarry created the opportunity in the 1960's for homage to be paid to Deer, Howie, and Zussman, authors of the mineralogy classic called "Rock Forming Minerals". This monumental set of texts in the field of petrology is well-known to many, and a miniature-sized sample of each is included. Deerite has black acicular crystals, Howieite is in shiny black acicular crystals, and Zussmanite is in green micaceous crystals, all being on matrix. From the impressive and expansive collection of Dr. Robert J. Lauf, these are referenced and Type Locality specimens, both of which are of particular interest to collectors. Includes a wrapped set of the original texts, a journal article, note card, and any labels. This is an unusual set of minerals, scientifically interesting even if not particularly photogenic. Each piece is a massive specimen of approx 3-5 cm of the mineral in reference quality.
