Item Description
The Huanggang Deposit in Inner Mongolia, China has been a prolific specimen-producer for quite a few years, with some of the most distinctive and eye-catching minerals from any Chinese locality. This piece is an incredibly hard to find Datolite, the first of its kind that we've had to offer in the auctions. Dozens of sharp, well-formed, prismatic monoclinic crystals of a pleasing light yellow-green hue measuring up to 1.3 cm long can be seen covering the display side of the specimen. Interestingly, nearly all of the crystals have a defined white "cap", possibly from an inclusion of another species, or a possible alteration on the surface. Most of the crystals are damage free, but there are a few broken spots here and there. It's a very presentable and eye-catching display piece, and thanks to a saw mark on the base, it sits beautifully on its own without the aid of a base or clay. If you're a completionist collector, this is something that I'll bet you don't have in your collection, whether you collect worlwide Datolites, Chinese minerals, or specifically specimens from the Huanggang Deposit. Don't miss out on this one, we don't have another to offer. It's incredibly difficult to put a value on a piece like this, but it's unique and rare, and remarkably difficult to find for sale in today's market. From the collection of Kurt Hefendehl (#914 C), a well-known German collector all over Europe with worldwide contacts to dealers and collectors. He started collecting seriously at the age of 14 and his great and varied worldwide collection reached over 6000 pieces. He was very active mineralogically until shortly before his passing in 2020 at the age of 82. Considering his collection had a large number of pieces, it still had an unusually high standard of quality from most worldwide localities. He particularly specialized in all classics as well as minerals of the Black Forest, where he spent much time collecting. His Black Forest and German subcollections went to his good friend Wolfgang Wendel. We at The Arkenstone have the privilege of offering the remainder of this great worldwide collection over the coming months and years through our various platforms.
