Item Description

A beautiful polished nodule of the famous Datolites from the Delaware Mine in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. These are highly characteristic of the region, but there are almost no other Datolites that look like this from any other world locality. It's not just the beautiful appearance of the material, but the wide range of colors in which it occurred. I've seen Datolite nodules from this area that feature pink, orange, golden, yellow, cream, lavender and even greenish hues. They almost remind one of Agate with the beautiful saturation and semi-banded like appearance when they are sliced and polished. This particular nodule shows a gorgeous light rosey-pink hue in the center, with soft lavender shades around the exterior edges. It's a good sized piece for the material, complete all around and very eye-catching in person. The piece originally was in the collection of Earl Calvert of San Gabriel, California. Specimen weight is 528 grams.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 401 MI.1; 4328 George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
