Cylindrite (rare) (rich specimen)

Item Description

This is a fantastic, rich of specimen of one of the most unique mineral species out there, in terms of morphology. Cylindrite is a lead, iron, tin, antimony sulfosalt which forms in distinct (and frankly quite rare) "cylinder" or "tube" shaped crystals, hence the name. The crystals form as a result of layered sheets of the crystal cells, which rotate slightly when stacked upon one another, causing the naturally curved shape. This specimen is especially fine considering that it is loaded with crystals that measure up to 3.1 cm, which is good sized for the species. Additionally the crystals are quite lustrous and bright for the material, which can often be dark and somewhat dull. The Santa Cruz at Poopo is the type locality for the species, which is where this piece was found. A great opportunity for any collector to own a species rarely seen for sale in today's market in a fine example. Incidentally, this species belongs to the only group of minerals that forms in naturally "round" or "cylindrical" shaped crystals. I have not seen any new specimens of Cylindrite on the market in several years, and the pieces from Poopo are certainly the best in the world. Valued $1,500.
