Item Description
A rare old piece dating back to the 1800s when these came out of this famous old copper mine, opened in 1532! Splendent, partially gemmy, cherry-red cuprite crystals are nestled in a vug in massive cuprite ore. The two old German labels say Cuba "in the West Indies." One surely dates to the 1800s! I have seen several of these in European museums and in very old collections, labelled as being owned by the Baroness Burdett-Coutts, a 19th century collector with some connections, apparently. This one was in the Senckenberg Nature Museum in Frankfurt, Germany, at one time. It is an EXTREMELY rare specimen! valued $900-1200
