Item Description

The famed Mashamba West Mine in DR Congo is simply of the top localities for Cuprite in the world. Sadly this mine is no longer producing specimens, but the pieces that came out were certainly among the top tier for the species. This excellent large miniature / small cabinet specimen dates back to the 1970s and features a little vug containing several superb quality, razor-sharp, well-formed, highly lustrous, modified octahedral crystals measuring up to about 5 cm, sitting on a thin layer of soft blue colored Chrysocolla, associated with a couple of gemmy golden crystals of Baryte on matrix. Now the crystals may not be terribly large, but they are incredibly fine for the material with a highly reflective splendent luster and a fiery blood red color when backlit. We've done our best to illustrate the quality in the photos, but you really have to see them in person to appreciate how fine they are. I will also point out that the Cuprites smooth and well-formed, with no etching or pitting. A wonderful example of these classic Cuprites from this famous locality.
Ex Brian Kosnar specimen, originally in the collection of Dr. Wouter van Tichelen
