Item Description

A wonderful example of the old classic Cuprites on Copper from Cornwall. This piece is from St. Day, though no specific mine was given (possibly from Wheal Gorland), and features excellent, sharp, lustrous, well-formed, dark red metallic crystals of Cuprite measuring up to 5 mm, sitting on Native Copper on matrix. The Cuprites are beautiful to view up close, and they glow with wonderful blood red color when backlit. The habits vary showing octahedral, cubic, dodecahedral faces depending on which crystal you're viewing. A really attractive piece of what are certainly some of the most renowned European Cuprites ever found.
From the collection Dr. Robert ("Rob") Bowell, a geochemist and adjunct professor in Geochemistry and Mineralogy at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Rob has a background in applied geology in tropical and deeply weathered terrains, he also has done mining consulting in the fields of due diligence, financial and technical audits, process chemistry, environmental geochemistry, environmental engineering and mineralogy.
