Cuprite on Copper

A classic example of the fine-quality specimens from the Rubtsovsk Mine in Russia. Typically, these specimens will feature either Copper or Cuprite, but a balanced combination of the two is not that easy to find, especially in such an aesthetic specimen as this. Many well-formed and deep-red crystals of metallic Cuprite, measuring up to 9 mm on edge, are elegantly perched on a flowing group of crystallized Copper. Varying in habit, the Copper crystals reach up to an impressive 1.6 cm. The piece is crystallized on all sides, and I think it is fair to say that the Copper crystals range from euhedral to subhedral. Traces of brown Calcite fluoresce a bright orange, adding an interesting element that remains 'hidden' in the normal light of day. This cabinet piece is an excellent example of this uncommon association. It is large, colorful, and showy. Even in the time it came out, early 2000s, such a piece would have ben $4000-5000 quite easily. Now, try finding one!
