Cuprite is not a rare mineral, but superb crystallized examples are rare in nature. Among the top localities for Cuprite in the world, the famous Mashamba West Mine has to be included. Some of the most attractive and fine quality examples of the species have come from this mine. This attractive thumbnail specimen features a group of excellent, very sharp, well-formed, textbook octahedral crystals of Cuprite measuring up to 1.2 cm associated with minor Malachite. When backlit the Cuprite crystals show the classic blood red color for which the species is known along with excellent internal gemminess! Minor roughness can be seen, so the piece is not pristine, but that color and internal gemminess is certainly better than most Cuprites you'll find from anywhere else in the world.
