Item Description

A classic, shapely modified cuprite octahedron with alteration of malachite coating the surface - very distinct to finds of the early 1980s at the Emke Mine. The attachment at the base reveals the glassy wine-red to cherry-red cuprite. Ex Bill and Sharon Panczner Thumbnail Collection. The piece is from their award winning competition thumbnails. Bill was the first Curator of Earth Science at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum in 1974 and the author of the 1987 book Minerals of Mexico. It is the most thorough summary of the subject. Read about Bill in the Mineralogical Record Biographical Archive at: https://mineralogicalrecord.com/labels.asp?colid=841. See the 1996 Mineralogical Record article in Vol. 27, No. 2. The mine closed in 1974. A classic Onganja malachite on cuprite thumbnail, rare for a competitive quality as it is so finely formed, balanced, and textured.
