Item Description
While gems are typically defined as inorganic in their nature there are a few organic items that have been commonly used as gems for millennia. Pearls, Coral and Amber are probably the most popular organic substances that have made their way into the world of gems and jewelry. A pearl is a hard object produced within the soft tissue (specifically the mantle) of a living shelled mollusk. Just like the shell of a mollusk, a pearl is made up of calcium carbonate in minute crystalline form, which has been deposited in concentric layers. The ideal pearl is perfectly round and smooth, and this shape is often created in cultured pearls. The finest quality natural pearls have been highly valued as gemstones and objects of beauty for many centuries, and because of this, the word pearl has become a metaphor for something very rare, fine, admirable, and valuable. Here we have a beautiful matching Pearl set featuring a pair of 8 mm (approx) round pearls with a gentle iridescence on the surface. Freshwater cultured pearls can make for a great gift for the upcoming holidays. Both pearls have been drilled, so they can easily be set into earrings.
