Item Description

Desirable rich orange-red color on this large, sculptural, dense jackstraw cluster of intergrown highly lustrous crocoite prisms on the sturdy gossan matrix plate. Many of the crystals, to 3.5 cm, are hollow, typical of specimens from some of the older finds. This excellent specimen has a fine provenance. It was first in the John Jago Trelawney Collection, a prominent California collector. He transferred most of his very fine collection to the Smithsonian in 1977 and later. See: https://mineralogicalrecord.com/biographies_labels/jagojohn/. The Smithsonian numbers match on the label and specimen. New York dealer and collector Larry Conklin obtained the piece, who passed it on to well-known New Jersey collector, George Elling. Larry Conklin valued the specimen at $3500. A classic, very rich and showy large older crocoite from the famous Dundas area of Tasmania with an excellent history.
