Item Description

Creedite was first discovered in Colorado, at the Colorado Fluorspar Company Mine, near Wagon Wheel Gap, which is close to the town of Creede. With that said, the original specimens had no color, and it wasn't until years later that more colorful examples of Creedite were found at other Colorado localities. This piece comes from the famed Cresson Open Pit Mine which is a huge gold (telluride) deposit, but specimens of any kind of seldom available, especially in the modern era of mining. This specimen is without a doubt the largest and richest Creedite that we've ever had to offer from this locality, and it has a beautiful violet color to boot! The piece is loaded with hundreds of tiny sparkling crystals which have formed into small radial "bursts", covering a good portion of the display side of the piece. There are even a few small open vugs on the back of where beautiful little crystals can be seen as well. Without a doubt, purple (or variations of purple) is the most desirable color for Creedite, but full-sized cabinet display specimens with this particular hue are downright rare, and virtually unseen, regardless of the locality. Even the famous pieces from Santa Eulalia or the more contemporary examples from Kazakhstan were almost NEVER seen in big cabinet sized pieces like this. An important rare locality piece and the color is incredibly eye-catching.
Valued $2,500-$3,000.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 12.1.1 CO.2; 7994. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
