Corundum var: Ruby (RARE locality specimen) (near ''floater'' crystal)

Item Description

An incredibly hard to find Ruby crystal from the Kyauk-pyat-that-atay-pyant mine in Mogok This is the ONLY specimen we've ever had to offer from this mine which according to the entry on mindat.org states that mining at this locality closed down in 2001. This piece is a notably sharp and rather well-formed, lustrous, dark purplish-red crystal with decent translucency when backlit. The crystal is very close to being a complete "floater" as it's crystallized all over, with only one small imperfection I can see. There are defined striated trigonal faces all over, which means that the crystal came directly out of the marble, and wasn't found tumbling in gem gravels, as it shows no signs of being rounded. A really attractive and notably rare locality specimen for any fan of gem crystals, Rubies or minerals of Mogok. Specimen weight is 3.76 grams.
