Corundum (rare old CA locale)

A first-rate example of the strange and dramatic Sapphires collected by the Gochenour brothers at this remote California locality. This bluish-gray Corundum crystal is aesthetically placed on metamorphic matrix. Collected in the 1990's, this sapphire, like the others that were mined, was meticulously repaired by the miners after finding the collapsed pocket. The form is excellent, with the crystal being tapered and terminated, with a bit of the same kind of unusual "bending" that you see most notably in many great Sri Lanken Sapphires. These are important and unusually large Sapphire crystals for a USA locality,and at 10.2 cm in length, this is certainly a significant Corundum from this remarkable, one time find. Try finding them for sale today?! They are American classics. This was recently deaccessed from the extensive collection of Bob Reynolds, who cherished both minerals and fossils as he collected. Bob is a prolific author and has had several curating positions in museums.
