There are a few organic materials that have becomes staples in the gem world, particularly Coral along with Bone, Pearl and Amber. Coral gems traditionally have been more popular outside of the United States, but I've seen a lot of this material appearing in the US market, so it's obviously gaining popularity among collectors. These stones are cut and polished to bring out their rich color as they often have a very dull matte luster when they are found. This "Oval Brilliant" cut gem is a rich orange-red color stone with excellent consistency of color. Most of this material is polished into cabochons, so this is a rarely seen faceted example. Please note that this stone has most likely been stabilized to help maintain its glowing warm hue, which is a common and completely accepted practice in the gem world. A beautiful stone for any collector.
