Item Description
The famed Shattuck Mine in Bisbee is the type locality for Shattuckite, but was also a major ore producer, as the entry on mindat.org states, "This mine produced some 3 million or more tons of copper and lead-zinc ore from 1906 to 1947 and some manganese oxide in 1917-1918. Over 18,000,000 tons of ore were produced overall". This piece is a rarely seen example of Native Copper from this well-known locality, featuring a hefty mass, but it's not just a "lump" of Copper, as I can clearly see small defined crystals faces under magnification, along with some tiny octahedral deep Cuprite crystals of Cuprite. Additionally, there are some secondary alterations on the surface, showing various blue and greenish hues, which could be something as common as Malachite or Chrysocolla, or potentially something rarer like Connellite or Shattuckite. The piece weighs 630 grams (1 pound, 6 ounces), so it has some heft for its size. If you collect native elements or minerals of Bisbee, I'll bet you don't have a good Copper specimen from the Shattuck Mine in your collection.
This piece came to George by way of Fred Parker, and was originally in the collection of Vince Rizzo.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 1114 AZ.5; 5093. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
