Item Description

A rarely seen, and notably rich specimen of Conichalcite from the lesser-known Higgins Mine in Bisbee. This material was actually referred to as "Higginsite", which was described by Charles Palache as a new mineral in 1920, but it is now used as a synonym for the already established Conichalcite. This piece is a fine display specimen filled with a nearly complete coverage of stark green micro botryoids of Conichalcite, covering the underlying matrix. The piece looks great under magnification, and the sheer amount of Conichalcite is significant. One of the best pieces of this material that we've ever had to offer, though to be fair, we haven't had many of them over the years.
This piece was originally in the collection of Dr. William F. Tatu, a radiologist from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, and additionally in the collection of Joe Cilen. It was acquired by George through Jim Kaufman of Jim's Gems.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 41.5.1.2 AZ.1; 8264. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
