Cobaltoan Calcite

Bands of vivid, variably pink cobaltoan Calcite on this striking and colorful specimen from this obscure and extinct locality. The Calcite has a somewhat waxy luster and is somewhat translucent when backlit. The best of this material is some of the finest color cobaltoan Calcite in the world, though it is rarely available on the market. This piece shows only slight fluorescence under UV light. From an old East Coast collection, this piece comes with an historic label from the legendary mineral dealer, Hugh A. Ford. Since the label has Ford's New York address, it dates to 1946-1957.
