Item Description

Vivid pink color draws the eye on this impressive large cobaltoan calcite scalenohedron from the famous Mashamba West Mine. This sculptural and unusual matrix crystal is terminated on one end against the matrix. The broken bottom end reveals that there are two generations of calcite on this very attractive piece. The inner generation is a rich pink and is more translucent. Mashamba West cobaltoan calcites are considered to be the world's finest and were collected in the mid-1980s, with none since. The architecture on this rare-style matrix piece is striking. Classic, highly desirable cobaltoan calcite from the locale. See the 1991 Mineralogical Record article in Vol. 22, No. 1. This is a significant, large, intensely colorful example of big size, from finds of the 1980s
