Clinochlore var: Chromium-bearing Clinochlore (''Kammererite'') (classic locality)

Item Description

A wonderful old-time specimen of "Kammererite" from the Wood's Chrome Mine in Pennsylvania. For years, Kammererite was a valid species, but it is now defined as chromium-bearing variety of Clinochlore. Obviously the most famous Kammererite specimens are those from Turkey, but the pieces from the Wood's Chrome Mine predate anything that was found in Turkey. This piece is a foliated group of dark lavender colored blades, free of matrix, but the individual crystals are very good sized for the material, though none are fully terminated. It's a very interesting and rarely seen locality specimen that would make a fine addition to a suite of minerals from this famous old chrome mine, that lies just over the border from Rising Sun, Maryland.

Chet was born 1947 in started collecting minerals circa 1957. He worked briefly as a drill runner at the famous Sterling Mine, in Ogdensburg, New Jersey and from 1987 to 1990 he helped convert the mine into a public access mining museum. He has held the role of treasurer, vice president and president of the Franklin-Ogdensburg Mineralogical Society (FOMS), and has been a board member and vice president of the Franklin Mineral Museum. The rare copper arsenate, Lemanskiite was named in his honor in 1999.
