Pyrrhotite from Mexico, such as this style, once set the standard for the species for large and robust crystals. Although eclipsed in size by Russian and Chinese examples, they are still a classic of mineralogy and treasured by collectors of Mexican material in particular. They have a unique, beautiful bronzy patina and color. This old specimen was formerly in the Smithsonian (apparently in a collection from somebody named Davis) and traded out to dealer Gary Hansen at some point when he was doing exchanges in the 1970s and 1980s. It still retains his old label. The piece is hefty, dramatic, and sculptural. There is some natural crackling as you can see, but no cracks that go through, and no repairs. This is typical of the material, which was found in general pre-1980. Donated by Wayne Thompson, long a friend and business associate of Gary Hansen, who recently handled a part of his old personal collection.
