Item Description

An exceptional, sculptural and RARE old cinnabar in calcite combination from the historic mercury mines at Terlingua, Texas. A striking 4.3 cm vug in a calcite vein is dramatically lined with sharp dogtooth calcite crystals included with bright red cinnabar. The vug looks like shark's teeth with blood on them! Cinnabar was the primary mercury ore, but most such calcite included specimens have brown cinnabar. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 2968 and acquired from itinerant California dealer, Burt Jirgl in 1963. She recently passed away in 2020. The mines opened in the 1880s and finally closed after World War II. See the 1990 Mineralogical Record article in Vol. 21, No. 3. How often do you see a superb old antique Terlingua cinnabar in calcite of this quality? Valued at $750-1000. A MUST for the species or locality collector!
